Ralphie Smooth first found interest in electronic music in 1998 from mixtapes like B96 and the Bangin the Box series. He was first introduced to the underground scene in 1999 at the age of 16. At the time, the tri state scene was in full effect and Smooth was instantly a regular at all the local parties. While attending these events, Ralph was heavily influenced by all genres of electronic music from Detroit techno and Chigago house to Trance and Drum n Bass.
Smooth purchased his first set of turntables in the summer of 1999 and has since dedicated a large portion of his time practicing the art of mixing and building a substantial vinyl library. A big influence in this was the opening of Scratch n Spin Records on 4/20/00 in his home town of Hillsborough, NJ. Smooth instantly got involved in the record store and began to be responsible for ordering trance and hard house records. This is where the New Jersey Housing Authority (NJHA) was formed by fellow DJ’s James Angel and Raymond Saga.
Ralphie Smooth began DJing at major new york city clubs, in 2001. A weekly regular at the legendary Exit Nightclub gave Ralph the oppurtunity to host private VIP events as well as playing with renowned artists such as Bad Boy Bill, Robbie Rivera, and Deep Dish. This eventually opened up oppurtunitys to play at venues such as SoundFactory, Avalon, Love and Webster Hall as well as various other venues around New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia. Ralphie Smooth has also played at the WMC in South Beach Miami, Las Vegas and Sicily.
This was about the same time that Ralph was introduced to the art of making electronic music by Raymond Saga, with equipment like the MPC2000, Roland TR909, Korg MonoPoly and the Access Virus. Smooth was instantly drawn to production and quickly developed skills to operate the digital audio workstation Cubase SX. A true passion for music developed at an early age and has continued to this day.
Continuing the journey of sound brought Ralphie Smooth the chance to not only play, but host some truly amazing events through recent years.
“I want to personally thank everybody that has supported me and stood by me through the years.”
